On July 15, the Council of the European Union adopted an assistance measure under the European Peace Facility worth EUR 13 million to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Albanian Armed Forces.

Funding will cover the purchase of non-lethal equipment to improve the forces’ mobility, manoeuvrability and protection. The Council will also provide technical training and other supporting services.

The Albanian Land Force will receive light armoured multipurpose vehicles, which provide high mobility and manoeuvrability in all types of terrain and weather conditions and ensure the protection of personnel against light weapons and explosives.

Comment: This is the first time the European Union provides military assistance to Albania under the European Peace Facility.

This measure will also strengthen Albania’s capacities with respect to its participation in the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy operations and missions, and any international coalitions.

The European Peace Facility is a EUR 17 billion which allows the EU to finance actions designed to strengthen the capacities of third States and regional and international organisations relating to military and defence matters. It was established in 2021 to enhance EU’s conflict prevention abilities, build and preserve peace and strengthen international security and stability.
