The trade war between the US and China, which has been ongoing since 2018, has significant implications for the European Union and its member states, including Bulgaria. As a strategic partner of China and a member of the EU, Bulgaria must balance Brussels’ regulatory framework with its own economic interests. Vladislav Spasov, a doctoral candidate at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, examines China’s economic levers and public messages regarding the trade war with the US, focusing on the 2025 white paper “China’s National Security in a New Era.” The article points out the need to build Bulgarian national capacity vis-à-vis China and emancipate Bulgaria from a Eurocentric perspective on the world.
