Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has sent a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other European leaders on April 12, to oppose Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe.

President Vučić last week ordered his government to establish a working group to oppose Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe, while the Parliamentary Assembly of this mechanism is expected to vote on April 16, and then the issue will go to the Council of Ministers.

On April 14, the Serbian president, who gathered in Belgrade the leaders of his government and those of the Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik, Željka Cvijanović and Nenad Stevandić, again outlined the possibility that his country will withdraw from the Council of Europe if Kosovo becomes a member.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is expected on April 16 to vote for the admission of Kosovo. The final decision will be taken at the meeting of the Committee of Ministers on May 16.

Comment: This development comes despite the Western calls for the implementation of the agreement for the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Prishtina, which requires that the parties do not hinder each other in the integration processes.

In the last two weeks, Vučić has also been sharply criticized by the main EU countries for his calls for boycotting the vote for the dismissal of the mayors in the four municipalities in the north of Kosovo.
