According to media reports, on 5-th of September the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) officially proposed President Aleksandar Vučić as the next Prime Minister if the party wins the upcoming early parliamentary elections.

Vučić still needs to dissolve the parliament and call the elections, expected to take place on October 25.

Vučić told party representatives that he would call elections in the coming days and that he would then resign as president to officially join the campaign. He also noted that the presidential elections would take place later.

At the SNS meeting, Aleksandar Vučić again repeated his claim that the protests are organized by unspecified foreign forces, AP reports. “The evil doesn’t come from within, it comes from outside,” the head of state said.

The SNS will face off against a list backed by protesting students, which is expected to include university lecturers and experts whose names have not yet been announced. Right-wing and centre-left opposition parties, as well as a few smaller groups, will also join the race.

Comments: Vučić started the implementation of the plan for staying at the top of power in Serbia even after the end of his second term as President early next year.
