According to some European media and information agencies, on April 5 2026, the Ministry of Defence of Serbia reported the discovery of a batch of explosives near the gas pipeline connecting the country with Hungary in a small village of Velebit. The incident has been classified as an attempted sabotage.
“During the operation, a significant quantity of explosive materials was discovered, as well as items and tools necessary for their preparation and use. Suspicious items were found in the immediate vicinity of the gas pipeline, that is, the gas infrastructure connecting the Republic of Serbia and Hungary,” the military department’s statement said.
The ministry specified that the operation involved officers of the criminal police, military police, the 72nd Special Operations Brigade, as well as representatives of the Security and Intelligence Agency and the Military Security Service.
“The act has been classified as a criminal offense under Article 348 of the Criminal Code – illegal production, storage, carrying, and circulation of weapons and explosives, in conjunction with an offense under Article 313 – sabotage in the stage of assassination,” the department emphasized.
It is noted that law enforcement agencies continue working on-site to search for additional evidence and identify the individuals involved. “The Ministry of Defence will continue, in cooperation with other authorities, to take all measures to ensure the safety of citizens and the protection of critical infrastructure,” the Serbian Ministry of Defence added.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that Budapest views the incident as an attack on the country’s sovereignty, since the main volumes of gas from Russia are delivered along this route.
According to the director of the Serbian Military Security Agency (VBA, military counterintelligence), Djuro Jovanic a sabotage attempt using explosives on the gas pipeline connecting Serbia and Hungary was planned by a foreign citizen.
“We had information that one of the members of a group of draft-age migrants would try to carry out sabotage on the gas infrastructure,” noted the VBA director during a press conference.
According to Jovanic, the suspect “will definitely be taken into custody.” The head of Serbian military counterintelligence also reported that operations to detect explosives were preceded by “good operational work on the ground and fruitful information exchange with other intelligence agencies.” In addition, the director of the VBA emphasized that the labelling on the explosives indicates that they were manufactured in the USA.
On April 5 immediately after the news coming from Serbia, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán convened an emergency meeting of the Defence Council in connection with an attempted explosion of critically important gas infrastructure between the two countries in Serbia.
“I have just finished a phone conversation with the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić. The Serbian authorities discovered a powerful explosive device and means to detonate it at a crucial facility of the gas infrastructure connecting Serbia and Hungary. The investigation is ongoing. I convened an emergency meeting of the Defence Council this afternoon,” Orban wrote on Facebook.
Hungary receives the main volumes of gas from Russia via the “TurkStream” pipeline and its branches in Bulgaria and Serbia.
Hungary, Russia, Turkey, and Serbia have agreed to strengthen the protection of the “TurkStream” gas pipeline from possible attacks from Ukraine. This was stated by the Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó following a meeting of the country’s Defence Council, convened by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in connection with an attempted sabotage on the Serbian section of the pipeline.
Comments:
First, President Putin informed in a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan that Ukraine is preparing an attack against the TurkStream pipeline. Then, Erdoğan received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Dolmabahçe Palace, where they had an in-depth discussion regarding possible cooperation between the two countries in the field of security.
The next day, Serbian security forces discovered explosives near the pipeline connecting Serbia with Hungary, placed by an immigrant of a draft – age that allows him to be engaged into the respective army. A topic that Hungary has taken up at the highest state level. In the same time we know that in Hungary, elections are scheduled for April 12 this year. In all of history, there is something else that deserves attention – the American origin of the explosive. This should make the current American leaders opposed to those using (most likely Ukraine) such an explosive against Hungary. We are waiting the American Vice-President in Budapest in the beginning of the week and his first reaction.
It is clear that someone made colossal efforts to organize this very interesting and comprehensive story. But WHO?
